Beyond Sensorial Portals, James Lee III: The experience: surreal, joyful, explosive
Beyond Sensorial Portals was commissioned jointly by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, and the Colorado Symphony and premiered at the opening of Orlando’s new concert hall. The piece explores the multi-sensory experience of attending an orchestra concert – a meta exploration of the pre-concert mingling, the space of the large hall, the orchestra warming up and tuning on stage, and a heroic swelling of powerful sound.
Violin Concerto in E minor, Felix Mendelssohn: The experience: freeing, refreshing, calming
Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor is one of the most performed pieces in the orchestral canon. With beautiful melodies, genius counterpoint, calm lyricism, and fiery codas, the piece seems so perfectly formed that the composer must have written it in one sitting.
Symphony No. 5, Jean Sibelius: The experience: familiar, powerful, inspiring
Sibelius is known for composing themes that become lodged in the listener’s mind. For this reason, his music has influenced countless composers, from Leonard Bernstein to John Coltrane to John Williams. The finale, in particular, is often claimed to be the greatest finale of all time, and the swan call theme from this movement has permeated film scores. In the words of ASO Artistic Director Geoffrey Robson: you know this music even if you don’t realize you know it.
